Someone once said that only two things in life are certain… death and taxes. Well, I’d like to add one more item to that list: laundry.
Nobody enjoys doing the laundry, but they sure do appreciate the results. So what if you could outsource this highly personal responsibility to someone else? What if you could harness the convenience of mobile technology to streamline the whole process?
Turns out, you can do just that! Though it’s still a new trend, there are lots of app-based services designed to help lazy, urban-dwelling twentysomethings skip the laundromat and have their clothes delivered to their doorsteps. Here are some of the best.
Cleanly
How it works: Cleanly is currently an iOS exclusive, but you can still place an order on the company’s website. Schedule your pick-up and delivery for between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., and either be home to greet them or leave your laundry bag outside your door. The company prefers not to leave your clean clothes sitting on the stoop, though. Cleanly has separate bags for your regular laundry and dry-clean items.
Pricing: $1.50 per pound for wash and fold, dry cleaning prices vary by item; $20 minimum
Turn around time: 24 hours for wash and fold, 36 for dry cleaning
Available in: New York City, Brooklyn, Washington D.C.
Rinse
How it works: Open the mobile app and schedule a “rinse.” All Rinse customers are on a specified “route” and receive free delivery on their designated day. However, if you need laundry ASAP, there’s a Rush Delivery option that will get you clean clothes in 24 hours or less for an additional $5. You’ll need to separate your wash-and-fold items, including sheets and towels, from your dry cleaning. You don’t have to be home to receive your clean laundry, but you’ll need to give the company access to a safe area to access your clothes.
Pricing: $1.75 per pound for wash and fold, with a 15-pound minimum. Dry cleaning starts at $2.50 and varies by item
Turn around time: 24 hours
Available in: San Francisco and Los Angeles
FlyCleaners
How it works: Much like Cleanly and Rinse, you can use the FlyCleaners app to schedule when you’d like to have your laundry picked up and dropped off, from 6 a.m. to midnight. If you’re in a rush, you can even request overnight cleaning. The service also has separate bags for designating between laundry and dry cleaning, and you can use the special instructions box to enter up to four garments you want to hang dry.
Pricing: Varies by location, though it equates to about $1.50 per pound for wash-and-fold items and $15 for dry cleaning. There’s also a $4 delivery fee on all orders under $30
Turn around time: Overnight, so if they pick up your wash-and-fold order by 11 p.m., you can schedule to have them back by 7 a.m.; dry cleaning takes three or four days
Available in: Most of Manhattan and Brooklyn
DRYV
DRYV is pretty much a carbon copy of the above laundry services, with a few minor differences. For one, DRYV laundry orders can take up to 48 hours, as opposed to the 24-hour turnaround offered by Washio and Cleanly. The delivery minimum is $20.
The app also allows you to track the progress of your order, including email receipts itemizing orders and prices, along with notifications for when your order is ready.
Available in: Chicago • Detroit • Los Angeles

Dirty Laundry
Currently only available in parts of New York City, Dirty Laundry is pretty similar to the other laundry-specific services on this list. In fact, there doesn’t appear to be any standout feature, aside from the apparently “cool and fun people” who arrive at your home to pick up and drop off your laundry.
So if you’re looking to make friends with the people who do your laundry, then maybe this service is for you. Even then, though, Dirty Laundry’s limited service area will likely disqualify you.
